"No passport, no visa" is the cry from
Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara, bewailing the sorry lot of many desperate
African emigrants. Mariam Doumbia is in fine voice on "Mouna" from the
back-catalogue she shares with her husband. Sister Fa is originally from
Senegal and is a strong proponent of women's rights, as is the Malian
tour-de-force that is Oumou Sangare; she headlines the Dun Laoghaire Festival
at the end of the month. Afel Bocoum, also from Mali and a protégé of the late
Ali Farka Toure, has a great new album of acoustic guitar music.
Dub Colossus will be the other outdoor headliners at Dun Laoghaire with their powerful combination of heavyweight rhythm, jazzy flourishes and evocative Ethiopian voices. Bossacucanova are stalwarts of Brazilian bossa beats; Lura is Cape Verdean chanteuse; and Chicha Libre aim to recreate the sound of '60s Peruvian chicha. Shantel is a DJ and prankster of gypsy pop. [dunkelbunt] is Vienna-based German DJ let loose in the Piranha vaults. Valravn are Danish / Faroese contemporary musicians with Nordic roots. The Culture Musical Club are the swaying essence of Zanzibari tradition. Mara Aranda is from Spain and sings a blend of Spanish roots, Sephardic and early musics. Keletigui et ses Tambourinis are one of the classic Guinean bands from the late '60s and early '70s. The Sterns label has documented this rich era of Guinean music in loving detail. Mamer plays pastoral modern meditative musings from the Chinese grasslands. Buddy and Julie Miller are greats from the Americana scene. Arkul, the Laya Project, and Roy Nathanson all make some great music, but at present I know nothing about any of them. The music speaks for itself! _________________________________________________________________ Here is the playlist for "Ear to the globe", broadcast on Monday August 10th.
