TONYNHO DOS SANTOS grew up in Simao
Dias-Se in Brazil and after fifteen years in Germany touring with various
bands, he came to Ireland and now living in Cork.
Tonynho studied trumpet at the University of Salvador da Bahía where he
developed his own unique style. His solos can be as soft and moody as Chet
Baker or as aggressive and improvisational as his idol Miles Davis. His
appreciation of Miles Davis becomes obvious in his exceptional improvisation
skills.Multi talented and charismatic Tonynho is
great example of the rich musical culture that originates in Brazil. He also
plays guitar, percussion, steel drums and sings.
RAJ PADAM is originally from Punjab in India and has been living in Ireland
for over 25 years. He works with traditional ethnic percussion including
Indian Tabla, Middle Eastern Darabuka drum and African drums, bringing
together a fusion of global influences. He also teaches African drumming in
schools and communities in Cork city and county. |
Bangsambra make positive
music with real heart. Combining the joyous expression of Brazilian
Tonynho dos Santos with the depth and versatility of percussionist Raj
Padam from India, this is music that can’t help but get listeners’ hips
gyrating and souls singing.
Tonynho’s joyous vocal improvisations put you in the company of some
ecstatic prophet speaking in tongues of a sexy, peaceful planet. In a
Sound World filled with looped guitar grooves and intricate rhythms, when
the colour of Tonynho’s trumpet spills across the room in his own special
mischief and exuberance it’s time to leave the humdrum world behind.
Raj with the Middle-Eastern Darabuka under grinding funk, liberated Salsa
meeting Hi-life with African Djembe, Punjabi Tabla over sweet Latin folk
and ballads, these two natural musicians brilliantly mix traditions and
techniques with musicianship, respect and sheer love of life.
