The Real Sound of Zimbabwe
We are in the process of raising funds in order to travel to Harare and film Zimbabwe's underground music scene. Music that is popular to the people on the street in Zimbabwe. In the 1980s & 90s bands from Zimbabwe enjoyed popularity in Europe, and beyond, thanks to the output from bands like The Bhundu Boys, John Chibadura & Four Brothers whose annual tours graced the stages of many festivals worldwide (all of whom we toured around Ireland). In recent years the number of their international tours have dwindled, and their music nearly forgotten, as many of the leading musicians from popular Zim acts have passed away, the band's popularity dying with them. With new personnel the bands live-on but struggle to get noticed beyond the borders of Southern Africa, even though their music is just as proficiently and enthusiastically performed as their predecessors and with the band's own original, unique 'signature' sound, their legacy.
It is our intention to travel to Zimbabwe and rediscover the bands that still draw the crowds to Zimbabwe night-life, to film them in concert, at rehearsals and at play. And to produce a one hour travelogue of the Zim Music Scene with video from bands like Alick Macheso, the new Four Brothers, Myrah Dube, Tryson Chimbetu, Hope Masike, Peter Moyo, Sulumani Chimbetu, Tiriro neGitare.... and the many others we can easily discover through our life-long contacts in Zimbabwean music. Our experience of filming and recording live music, on the road, in the studio and at the gig will enable us to capture the sounds, the mood, The Jit, The Sungura, The Zimdancehall, The Chimurenga music and the excitement of a night-out in Harare, in full HD with proper sound quality. We will also produce a series of 'one track' live videos from the performances of the acts to be uploaded to our YouTube channel and assist the artists' to market their live performance, worldwide. Our experience and privilege of touring, representing and working with hundreds of Zimbabwean acts & artists over 25 years will open many doors, we hope to open these doors to the rest of the world.
