Sinead O’Connor, one of the most
iconic and influential Irish artists of modern times, made the decision to
cover Curtis Mayfield’s searing diatribe against racism and ignorance
for her recently released album ‘Theology’. As timely in
Ireland
in 2008 as it was in
Chicago
in 1970, this heartfelt plea to embrace cultural diversity still rings true.
Republic
of
Loose
have had a massive impact on Irish radio over the past few years. Author and
music lover, Irvine Welsh recently cited their inescapable hit
‘Comeback Girl’ as “the best song ever written” in the New
York Times. They are recognized amongst their peers and critics as visionary
and innovative music producers.
Both Sinead and
Republic of
Loose
were approached to collaborate for the upcoming ‘Meteor Awards’ and decided
‘We People’ was the obvious track to perform. Everyone was so impressed
with the outcome that they decided to release it as a single. Between them,
they have completely reinvented the classic song. Sinead’s vocal
interpretation is stunning and poignant, and is wrapped in a slick RoL
production of catchy hooks, deft beats and a convincing rap from
Republic of
Loose
frontman Mik Pyro. They employed the vocal talents of the Dublin-based,
multi-cultural Discovery Gospel Choir and the results are quite
beautiful.
‘We People…’ will be released on
Sunday 10th of February, exclusively through iTunes; and then
through all download platforms form the 17th of Feb.
You can catch the 1st
exclusive live performance at ‘The Irish Meteor Awards’ on RTE 2 on Saturday
16th of Feb at
9pm
