Born in Nigeria in West Africa, Gboyega Akerele is a singer/song writer, drummer/percussionist, saxophonist and Colours Afrobeat Ochestra’s bandleader.

‘Boye lived and worked in Belgium for 6 years (1997 - 2003) and taught the art of African drums (Djembe)to students, mainly Europeans, some of whom are now teachers themselves. Whilst in Belgium ‘Boye also played, toured and recorded with Belgium based groups such as ‘Proyecto Secreto’ a renowned 12-piece Reggae/Ska band, ‘Kaiiman’ a four piece desert blues/Afro-jazz band and ‘Feso-Trombone’ an eight piece Afro-Jazz outfit. (Feso-Trombone was the valve trombonist for the late Fela-Kuti).

In 1999 ‘Boye formed ‘Odura’ Afro Jazz band, an 8- piece band which played songs written by 'Boye and performed in major venues & festivals throughout Belgium and Holland including the big stage at the Ghent festival 1999 (Ghent is one of Europe’s largest free festivals featuring a broad spectrum of the world’s music)

‘Boye moved to Ireland in 2004 where he studied music performance & sound technology at the Kylemore College in Dublin. 'Boye’s long years of experience as freelance musician in different bands both in Nigeria and Europe inspired him to introduce a new and fresh sound to the Irish Jazz scene.  After living in Drogheda, Ireland, and interacting with local musicians for over a year ‘Boye formed Colours Afrobeat orchestra and after 3 months of intense rehearsals the band were ready to play. The band was formerly launched at the Drogheda Arts Centre in April 2005 with support and co-operation of the arts department of the Drogheda Borough council, Drogheda Partnerships, The Society of St. Vincent de-Paul and the Drogheda Arts Centre. Colours' Irish debut performance was a great success and they were a big hit at the Drocheda Samba Festival in the summer of 2005
